Campus Football League

“Walmer High School has enjoyed an excellent relationship with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and this donation by the NMMU Campus Football League and the South West team is further proof of our positive association”. These were the words of Principal Lunga Dyani as he accepted a soccer kit and soccer balls on behalf of Walmer High School – the 2008 recipients of the CFL Memorial Award.

Walmer High School is the closest “disadvantaged” school to NMMU and faces numerous challenges in administering its sport programmes. One of the biggest barriers to the school’s participation in organized sport is equipment. In recognition of the school’s needs, the NMMU CFL launched the CFL Memorial Award by donating a complete soccer kit as well as 7 soccer balls to Walmer High School. The handover ceremony was attended by the members from the NMMU LOC and South West – the NMMU CFL team that was instrumental in securing the kit and who made the donation in remembrance of their player, David Mahn. The CFL Memorial Award will be awarded on an annual basis, sponsored by former players of the NMMU CFL and the league champions will determine the recipients of the award.

Mr. Zamxolo Mdani, the soccer co-ordinator at Walmer High School, assured all the NMMU CFL players in attendance that the donation would encourage the school team to reach greater heights. Walmer High School has performed well in local leagues and some of its pupils play for various teams in the PEFA League. It is hoped that one day, we’ll see the beneficiaries of this donation playing in senior competitive leagues.

In closing, Mr. Dyani also challenged the NMMU CFL players in attendance to organize a soccer match with the school pupils or to have two NMMU CFL sides play a match on the Walmer High School grounds. Don’t be surprised if we take up his offer!!
